In 2017, “Girls Who Code” reached 40, 000 girls through after school clubs, 7-week Summer Immersion Program.
Rock Valley College is the first Community College in Illinois to host a weekly Girls Who Code club! Starting Spring 2018, Rock Valley College began hosting a weekly 2 hour “Girls Who Code” club! The kick-off club was Wednesday, January 24th 2018 at 4:00pm. Each week, the girls will hear from role models in the field of computer science, design & code in groups, and have a time to group reflection. Professor Chuck Konkol and a local developer, Jenny Kunkel serves as lead facilitators. Our first session hosted 18 girls ranging from middle school to high school. Each girls received a notebook along with access to code training resources. In Week #2 the group will decide what CS Project they want to tackle to meet a need in our community. In addition, our first coding lesson with Scratch will take place! Spring 2018 session is closed for enrollment and will open for Fall 2018 starting May 10th, 2018.
