ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - A program at Rock Valley College that's encouraging local girls to get into coding is just getting off the ground but it's already drawing a crowd for next semester.
Girls Who Code aims to inspire, educate and equip girls in grades six through 12 with the skills to eventually get a career in the mostly male-dominated fields of coding or computer science.
Each week the girls learn about a different influential woman in programming and work on the semester project which is to develop an app or a website to help people adopt pets.
Girls Who Code facilitator Charles Konkol says if his students learn two things, he'll feel like he's done his job.
"Number one being a computer science teacher myself is to definitely become a programmer that's what I want selfishly but if they could just be brave and learn something new finish it and complete it all to the end and publish that app, publish that website then I'll be happy," said Konkol.
Girls Who Code is free and open to girls in grades 6 through 12. To register for the next semester click here
